Building a jet: Hobbyboss’ 1/48 AMX A-11A Ghibli- Finished… 99 44⁄100%

I finished my Hobbyboss AMX…. mostly.

The instructions call for placing the small M61 Vulcan gun barrel part as one of the last steps. Simple enough…. unless you push it in too far, and it drops inside the fuselage. Half an hour of shaking the model around produced no joy in getting it out. Thankfully, a friend has offered a suitable replacement part, so once I get that, I’ll add that in.

So I’m calling this “Ivory Soap Finished”. Meaning it’s 99 44100% of the way there.

This kit has to be in the top 5 of my all time favorite kits. It has no vices at all. The parts just fit, with no fuss. The detailing is very good. The decals could be a little better, but they’re not bad. I’d recommend this kit to anyone.

I’m not entirely happy with the finish. I tried a lot of new techniques on this one, and now that I look at the finished product, I wish I’d have experimented a little less. It doesn’t look bad, but because of my lack of experience with these new techniques, the overall look is not what I envisioned.

Still- I like it. It’s the first time in a very long time I’ve built a model and just looked at it for a while and smiled.

I normally sell everything I build, but I think I’m going to keep this one for a while. it’s been such a rejuvenating process to do something different, just for the fun of it. I want it on my shelf, at least for a while.

You can look back on the build process here.

  1. There is no technique on the model looking out of place imho, then again refinement is in the eye of the beholder i suppose.
now the result might not be inline with the realism you imagined, when that happens to me i usually hide the model out of sight and let it dwell there for a couple of days and then have a look with a fresh set of eyes. when i become involved too much with a particular subject i think i develop some kinda myopia and lose sight of the bigger picture if you get what i mean.

even in gray colors it’s refreshing to see an unusual subject always and your model looks lovely. i too love this kind of trainer/lt attack jet aircraft and i will take your word on the HB kit and like to build one when able!
    Cheers. 🙂
