Messer Type-F01 Part 2: Weathering And Finishing!

It’s time to finish the Bandai HG Messer Type F01! This has been a super fun build, and I’ve really enjoyed it. The large size of the model makes weathering easy, yet the fact that it is an HG kit made the assembly simple.

In this video, I cover several simple techniques that can be applied to any Gunpla. And while my overall weathering look for this one is “moderate”, the same techniques applied in layers can build up to a very weathered finish. Yet all of them are simple and replicable, for new modelers looking for scale model weathering tips, to advanced modelers seeking to refine their process.

Don’t Fear The Weathering

I think the biggest obstacle many people have who are beginner’s in model weathering is simply fear. Quite often I hear from people who say they fear “ruining” their model. And while doing something for the first time can be intimidating, moving forward sometimes requires learning from difficulty, or even failure.

To put it simply, you learn to weather scale models primarily by weathering scale models. No amount of reading, consuming videos, or asking questions will replicate the simple act of doing it.

So don’t be afraid to try it out.

The Messer Is A Great Place To Start

Sometimes it just takes a fun kit to get the ball rolling. Bandai’s Messer Type F01, which will feature in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash anime, is a great starting point. Simple to assemble, plenty of surface area for working on your weathering, and a menacing, chunky look all contribute to making this an excellent palette for any modeler.

I had fun building it, and fun making this video, so I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful. If you have any questions about the weathering techniques shown, please don’t hesitate to drop in a comment down below!
