Aviation Week is reporting a potential new contender in the T-X competition- Sierra Nevada’s Freedom Trainer. It’s an interesting concept- a lightweight trainer powered by two commercial grade engines. The project is in partnership with Turkish Aerospace Industries.
It’s an interesting approach. The aircraft appears to focus on low cost and low fuel consumption, which may be a plus for it. Of course, the obstacle that will have to be cleared is the performance measures outlined in the initial drafts of the T-X RFP.
